Happy 4th of July

The fourth of July is an exciting holiday to kick off late summer nights, family and friend gatherings, and endless time spent lounging by the pool. With all of the celebration commencing, it can be easy to let your guard down. Here are some important tips to keep your holiday weekend happy and safe.

Sun Safety

Sunburn can ruin any day of fun! It is so important to apply, reapply, and re-reapply sunscreen when outside for extended periods of time. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and more often when swimming or sweating.  Avoid blisters, burns, and soreness by hanging out in the shade, wearing sunglasses, taking brakes from being in the sun – especially during midday when the UV levels are highest.

Sparkler Safety

Nearly every person has fond memories of twirling sparklers and writing their name in the air; however, burning between 1800 and 3000 degrees Fahrenheit, these cute sticks of fire can become quite dangerous if not properly monitored. Make sure children are not waving sparklers or running around while holding one. These items remain hot long after the flame has gone out, so used sparklers should be placed in a bucket of water to ensure nobody burns their feet from stepping on one, or starting a fire.

Pool Safety

If you are having a pool party this 4th of July, find a responsible adult or two to be honorary lifeguards. At large gatherings, keeping up with every child gets a bit difficult. Having an extra set of eyes dedicated to pool safety can allow each parent peace of mind if they have a child who has wandered out of sight. Ask ahead of time if any adults are willing, if not, hire a teenager and pay them for their services. Also, be sure that they know CPR and that there is a life preserver on hand.

Road Safety

The most important thing you can do on the 4th of July is to keep your family off the road! 4th of July has the highest rate of road fatalities. If you must drive, be sure you’re sober, aware of your surroundings, and check that everyone in the car is properly secured with seatbelts or car seats. Even if you are fine to drive others on the road may not be, so drive defensively and be focused on the road.
