The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race takes place every year in Alaska starting with the first weekend in March! The race helps people remember and honor the importance of sled dogs to Alaska. It covers about 1,000 miles across the wonderful wilderness of America’s 49th state!
Grab your crayons and join us on this truly amazing race! You will learn about the race. You will learn about the mighty mushers who guide the sled dog teams. And you will learn about the brave, incredible dogs who run their hearts out to win the Iditarod Race!
Some of the facts you will learn about in the Iditarod Coloring and Activity Book include:
• In 1925, sled dog teams used part of the Iditarod Trail to deliver medicine to very sick children in Nome~ Alaska.
• Many of the dogs are Alaskan huskies.
• Mushers stop at checkpoints so the dogs can eat and sleep. Volunteer pilots from the Iditarod Air Force bring food and supplies to the checkpoints.
• Sled dogs paws are protected by booties.
• The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is called the “Last Great Race on Earth."
