Herbert Clark Hoover was born in 1874 in the small Iowa village of West Branch. His family followed the Quaker religious beliefs. Bert's father Jesse was the village blacksmith. He called his son "Bert." Jesse died when Bert was just six years old. His mother died three years later. Bert moved to Newberg, Oregon to live with his uncle.
